Gentlemen Prefer Brunettes – Adventures in Sewing

Blog, Style & Fashion

I love being inspired by the size and style of the women in the 50’s (more realistic, less cosmetically altered) and the artistry of couture from the 1930’s – 1950’s.

Beauty was the whole package and not just a “shape”. It was what the woman wore and how she carried herself. That was my inspiration for this dress.

I’m not exceptionally small, I’m not curvy at all; but as Lisa Stansfield belted “I’m all woman” and 💯 % luxurious.

My inspiration came from this burdastyle pattern.

IMG_6241

I’m not a fan of Starburst darting, especially darting like this that pulls to the middle. I have a straight figure and regular sized bust so this would create no real accentuating of anything. At best, this would only highlight my pooch ÂŻ\_(ツ)_/ÂŻ

But the simplicity of the cut and the godet train drew me in and I said “self… you can make something like this!” So I pulled out my basic bodice and straight skirt slopers and got to work .

The result was this super dope delicate mermaid flare at the bottom and a wild dope train.

stairwellGatsby standing

This cut (mermaid/ fit & flare) created curves where non exist! Lol and the obi belt that i made to “snatch” my waist; I ended up using as a shawl because I’m really going to learn to appreciate my shape this year!

The godet train gave me my full, entire, whole life.

This fabric was my favorite. I’d been holding this for over a year waiting for the perfect reason to bust this out and use it. It was very Gatsby – Art Deco. Rich gold, pale gold & black – and the design of the fabric was just aesthetically pleasing to me, it stood out, it was rich looking but not gaudy.

It made me feel VERY luxurious. And sometimes a lady just needs to feel that old Hollywood luxury (minus sexism and bigotry)

I ended up having a BLAST at our church banquet and the dressed proved that I could eat AND dance in it. It was a great night and a great (Gatsby of a) dress!

How To Go Overboard with Florals

Blog, Style & Fashion

Don’t you just hate when you hate something so much you end up loving it? Well… maybe not hate it, but when the industry is inundated with it… you just want to sort of fall back from it?Judging you...

That’s lowkey how I felt about florals; until I went through my closet to minimize my wardrobe, and realized I’ve had a lifelong love affair with florals.

Just seeing people clamor over florals made me want to do something different. My only option? Don’t play it safe.

The key to going overboard is uniformity. The blouse and trousers are both H&M. Buying both patterns at the same shop takes the guess work out of wondering will it match. Retail stores profit on making shopping easier so prints are often made to compliment one another. In this case, the exact same print.

This is a great play on a “traditional” black & white look. It’s as if your outfit is almost the accessory… almost…

The shoes were NOTHING like the pattern of the blouse & trousers, but it just worked. The color palette was slightly sharper, defined, and brighter. Not to mention the Oriental floral design of the bootie added compliment and contrast to the Victorian floral design of the outfit.

Booties were from Justfab and I got them during that insane Black Friday/ cyber Monday/ they havin’ sales all dag on month deal.

When I put this outfit together it just felt “right”. On my ever evolving style journey it’s comforting to know that simplicity and grandeur still have their place. And there are still fun ways to pull off bold looks without looking insane… at least in my opinion 😏.

How are you making it through the floral trend? Comment below!! Per usual, all pieces were (WELL) under $50!

Spend wisely!

PSA: Don’t Catch These Hands this Halloween – The Only Clown I’ll ever Love

Blog, Community, Uncategorized

This blog is dedicated to my twin brother. You know what you did… and now the rest of the world will too…

Clown pictured is not Soupy. Image from Pinterest

I had a clown once. A pretty green Bisque clown with eyes that opened & closed. Her name was Soupy Oatmeal. We had a song. The song was clearly a bop. And we sang it every time I ate cream of wheat (hence the name Soupy Oatmeal – also I know cream of wheat is not oatmeal I was ahead of my time) We sang it so much that I felt the need to sing it with her WHATEVER the breakfast was that we were having. Like I said…it was a bop. My twin brother did not feel the same way. One morning after a full out belt of a few verses of the Soupy Oatmeal song I sat her down so that I could hum & eat. He grabbed Soupy and threw her at the wall and screamed ” I hate Soupy Oatmeal and that stupid song… shut up!” *insert Diane blackish gif*

Needless to say I was shocked because my twin is HIGHLY mild mannered. But what I just witnessed was the birth of one of his pet peeves. Eating & singing. He now hates anything that denotes greediness when it comes to food. Twiddling fingers… humming…tapping….if you don’t want a lecture on why your food appreciation is unattractive, please eat in silence.

Well,  I picked up Soupy Oatmeal and her eyes were broke. Like… rolled up in her head. She looked possessed. I loved her. But her eyes man. She couldn’t stay. I cried and told my mom and she was like ” well maybe this will stop you from singing at the table, Rashaan, don’t break your sisters stuff” That’s it? No beating?! Not even a raised voice. Clearly no one liked the song. But I still sing it to this day when I want a rise out of them. You can’t stop my song.

But I say all of that to share with you this PSA. I loved that clown to bits but was quick to release her because of her “new” horror movie eyes.

So YOU can and will catch these hands, a chair, a boot, a tire iron, or get tazed this Halloween if you come at me with a Pennywise costume, a Michael Meyers costume, freddy, A zombie… I dont know you. Don’t let you be on the wrong side of my seriousness. It is not a game. I can’t stand when people do something to scare you then say they were playing. I’m going to hit first and keep hitting. There is no need to ask questions. You brought this on yourself. If you want to scare someone, scare yourself, sit at home and take selfies. People have phobias and default to fight or flight. Youre holding the losing hand if youre wagering that I’m going to choose flight.

People are legit getting shot and then shocked like you weren’t menacingly approaching someone to evoke a fear out of them. Do yourself a favor, don’t dress like that, don’t dress your kid like that, it isn’t cute and they WILL be denied candy.

Like, I don’t even have it for Ronald. Bruh, leave your happy meal on the table and step back… no need for interaction.

The only clown I saw it for was Soupy and she gone! So there is no hope for you and no future in ya frontin.

I googled “clowns” to find pictures to insert and I just want yall to know I consider the internet to be full of some sick individuals. Y’all gotta chill B.

Jumpers that work for Summer and Fall

Blog, Style & Fashion

Every day should be brunch attire.  Comfy, chic, flattering. I told my friend “I’m going for part PJ’s, part beast in these streets.”  And as I continue to curate my line to bring you some great style choices this jumper has now been added to the roster.

“Jump Man” Jumper

I made this jumpsuit to be a bright piece to be worn from summer into fall. This particular print is a dope very nostalgic very 90’s African print that I picked up from 116th in Harlem.

The rolled hem, kimono sleeve, and wrap front make this a style ease option for the busty and non busty alike.

Spot the donut. #jdilla

This ain’t ya mothers jumper either. This is definitely backside friendly without being too tight or too loose. Baby Bear.

Pair with a denim jacket and loafers in the fall, or a trench and combat boots for a more “breakfast club” vibe.

How would you rock this? What pattern would you want to see? Want to be first on the list of  this release?! As always:  thefashionunder50@gmail.com

Amazon Prime Day – Is it The Mid-Summer come up?

Blog, Techie

Amazon prime day is today! It started last night. I was already asleep. BUT the question is – is it worth it?

We all like sales but is this just more mindless shopping?  The short answer is yes.  Now I’ll show my hands and admit since April I’ve purchased TWO echo dots and a firestick.  And do you know what I’ve realized? Gadgets begat gadgets.  I stopped buying clothes but have set my site on gadgets and I’m ALWAYS looking to see what upgrades are out.  But IF you’re calculating with your funds; this could really be a midsummer come up.

Here are some facts.  You have to be a prime member first. Not one? Here. Thank me later (maybe).

I’d say stick to the gadgets because the beauty deals didn’t really strike me as a deal.

* Amazon Echo for $89.99 (save $90)

I’m a bit salty about this one but I’m going to chill. I have two dots…

* Amazon Echo Dot (2nd Generation) for $34.99 (save $15)

Again lowest price EVER. I got my first one for $50 and my second for $40. I could’ve had an echo AND a dot if I’d played the long game… ÂŻ\_(ツ)_/ÂŻ

* TP-Link Smart Plug  ($19.99) that’s half off!! Combo that with the $34.99 dot and you have a dope little combo for UNDER $60!

* Amazon Music Unlimited 4 month Membership for $0.99

This is for new subscribers only, but a bargain worth trying.  Just set a reminder with Alexa to cancel it after the 4 month trial! 😉

Your Madras

Blog, Style & Fashion

I am a FAN of Madras plaid.  I love it, love it, love it.  Thing is, when something isn’t on trend you don’t see it around as much.  And that sucks because it doesn’t mean it’s not in style.

However, when I was lurking around my local fabric store, I happened upon some non-campy looking Madras!  EUREKA’S CASTLE!! So, I got some fabric and went to town on making some super dope wide leg palazzo pants.   If you’re a seamstress or you sew, you know that completing a project is bittersweet because on one hand, it’s done, but on the other hand it’s like coming to the end of a binge-a-thon.  There is this sick feeling in your stomach that is over.  So, what do you do?  You go to the fabric store and buy more.  Madras is the original statement fabric so why not make two separate things with it?  So that’s what I did.

The Short of it

I LOVE jumpers. I love summer but I also like layering so this madras jumper is everything for versatility. In the summer, you can wear it loose or belted.

Don’t like your arms? Throw a T under it.  Trying to get away with a jumper and or madras for Casual Friday?  Pair this puppy with a button up and some loafers… thank me later cute hipster light hearted librarian.

Feeling like Rudy in the fall & can’t let summer go just yet? Throw some leggings on under this sucker and a denim jacket on top and you’re good money honey!

The Wide of it.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Just wear them already.  Soo dramatic. Soo “see me”.  Again, you just really cannot go wrong with a high waist, wide leg pant.  Flattering for most figures, the waist cinches and creates curves and structure.  The darting in the back is a godsend for accentuating backside.  And the wide leg airy fabric makes it feel like you’re walking in an evening gown sans the hassle.

If you’re interested in either the Jumper or the pants.  Please hit me up for pricing and pair.  Support your local artist! Support Small biz & community!

MAC Lipstick 💄 Sale 6/21 – 6/25

Blog, Health & Beauty

I see you 👀 MAC. It’s not even National Lipstick Day and you’re out here trying to keep up with the jonses.  I’m TOTALLY not mad at MAC’s current buy 2 Lip products get one free lipstick deal and you shouldn’t be either.

But here are the details:

It’s not buy 2 lip PRODUCTS get ANY 3rd lipstick free, you only have 6 lipstick colors to choose from.

AND… In store varies from online (sad 🐼).

I went in for the color Barbecue but actual MAC locations (Columbus, OH) only had Mangrove. Two totally different colors, both bright but different. Also once they sell out of the free color, it’s gone. And they are not swapping a similar color. They have special product to (my guess is) ensure no shrinkage during this promotion.

Call ahead. I had to go to two locations and wait like a half hour just for the free lipstick and switch up my purchase options… 😒.  It might sound like a hassle, but IRL it’s not if you have the time and were gonna kill time some other way (that involved spending your hard earned coins). #Mineaswell ÂŻ\_(ツ)_/ÂŻ

All & all, I’m pleased and so much so that I figured it’s worth he sharing!

Get Into It – 7 Ways to get Healthier and STAY that Way

Blog, Health & Beauty

7E3275A9-EE7A-4628-B6D8-D04CEC7D73AEI’m not getting any younger. And at this place, I can honestly say it’s harder to fully embrace a healthier lifestyle the more years I have behind me. I mean my teenage years lied to me. They told me if I wish it, it will come (well… not boobs). My twenties lied to me. They told me minimal effort can yield maximum results. And I pretty much rebelled in my thirties because I adopted the you earned it, treat yourself mantra. Now on the very cusp of 40, I find myself chasing time down to gain a lifestyle I should’ve adopted LONG ago.

But let me share a few key ways to grab a healthy lifestyle by the neck and make it your punk.

1. Learn the Difference between Treats and Snacks.
For some reason, I hear Biggie Small’s 10 crack commandments here (number 9 should’ve been number 1). I’ve learned that snacks are the healthy in between meal choices. Treats are those one off, you’ve worked hard this week have a ding dong. But like you legit cannot have a pack of Ding Dongs every day for a snack. 310 calories of sugary destruction. Have a Honeycrisp apple instead.

2. Do it in phases
Ramp yourself up into a lifestyle. Dropping all that you know to pick up new stuff almost always ends in failing and you end up on a binge-a-thon eating ice cream naked in the mirror crying and swearing you see yourself expanding… no? just me? Well, that escalated quickly.

3. It’s gonna take longer; Keep going.
Celebrate the victories, don’t let the setbacks derail you. The older you get, the longer it takes to see progress. I personally suggest food lifestyle change and exercise combo to jumpstart what you want to see. Let’s be honest you can exercise all you want, if you’re still making poor food choices, it’s like casting pearls before swine.

4. Be Aggressive!
I know I said do things in phases but there’s a battle rhythm to that too. Push yourself to do one more rep. Commit to going to the gym three times a week (I did that). Create GOOD habits and do your very best to stick to them.

5. DETOX.
I cannot stress this enough. When I wasn’t seeing real progress after month 1, I thought “detox kid”. So, I cut out carbs and sweets for one month (NOT February).
Broham.
Changed.
My.
Life.
Aside from the fact that no one was harmed from my detox, I learned HOW to really eat better, I learned that I was addicted to sugar and carbs. And I learned how to level set eating healthy. It’s really changed my outlook on good food choices. BUT…

UNDERSTAND WHAT DETOX CAN DO TO YOU and why it’s good for you
Detox, much like pretty…hurts. I feel like by the time you realize you need to detox from something, you’ve worked up at least a mild addiction to it. So cleansing yourself is key to really get a foothold on healthy lifestyle changes. To be honest I cannot consume sugar like I used too. I’ve had an adverse affect to it lately. What was once a “norm” is now way too much. But isn’t that what we want to see when we make lifestyle changes?

6. Invest in yourself – buy cute (inexpensive) workout clothes

So this worked for me.  I went to Five and Below and balled out… while it was only a $50 Haul, it was just enough to get me going to the gym consistently.  I had no excuse not to go because I had all that I needed.  Not only that, on the weeks when I wasn’t able to meet my work out goal due to ministry obligations, I didnt beat myself up either, it was win, win.

IMG_0344

7. Realize that meal prep takes A LOT of time but it’s worth it
Let’s file this under things Pinterest never tells you but should. They’ll give you a million great ideas for food prep but they never tell you it takes your WHOLE SUNDAY. And let me be honest it does.

Invest in 5 solid recipes and 2 healthy cheats. you can alternate that for three weeks before getting tired of food choices.  And to be honest the BEST way to get a grip on calorie intake is meal prep.  That includes snacks and emergency meals too.

To date I’ve lost over 15lbs. and I’ve reached my “goal” weight.   Now I am working to maintain my health and chisel my body.  Let me know what you do or if anyof these steps work for you!

Here’s to long life and good health!
